Can you go to office afterwards? Can you eat dinner that night? Treat this as orientation only. A night-time toothache sometimes turns out to be a sinus problem or a wisdom tooth pressing on its neighbour, and a "sensitive" tooth is sometimes a cracked one. The examination decides.

Treatments that finish in a single visit
Scaling and polishing takes thirty to forty-five minutes. Expect your teeth to feel slightly sensitive and your gums a little sore for a day or two, particularly if there was a lot of deposit. The gaps you suddenly feel between your teeth were there all along; the tartar was filling them. You can eat normally the same day.
Tooth-coloured fillings take twenty to forty-five minutes per tooth, depending on size. The material is set with a blue light before you leave, so the filling itself is hard immediately. The reason to wait before eating is the anaesthetic: a numb cheek is easy to bite without noticing. Allow two to three hours.
A simple extraction, meaning a tooth that is fully visible and comes out without surgery, takes fifteen to thirty minutes. You bite on gauze for about forty-five minutes afterwards. For the first twenty-four hours, avoid hot drinks, spitting forcefully, straws and smoking, since all of these can dislodge the clot that protects the socket.
In-clinic whitening takes about an hour to an hour and a half. For the next forty-eight hours, stay away from strongly coloured food and drink. In a Gujarati household that means going easy on chai, coffee, haldi-heavy dishes and red chutneys for two days, which is harder than it sounds.
Treatments that need two to four visits
Root canal treatment and the crown after it
A root canal removes the infected or inflamed nerve from inside the tooth, cleans the canals, and seals them. Many teeth can be completed in one sitting of sixty to ninety minutes. A molar with a long-standing infection, or a tooth with curved or narrow canals, often needs two or three sittings, with medicine placed inside the tooth between them. You can go back to work the same day; most people describe the tooth as tender to bite on for two or three days, not painful.
Then comes the part people skip. A root-treated back tooth is hollowed and brittle, and it needs a crown. Crowns take two visits: one to shape the tooth and record its form, and a second, usually about a week later, to fit the finished crown made by the lab. Crowns and bridges
A crown on its own is the same two visits described above. A bridge, which replaces a missing tooth by anchoring to the teeth on either side, follows the same rhythm with a slightly longer first appointment. You wear a temporary between visits. It is held with a weaker cement on purpose so it can be removed, which means sticky and hard food on that side is off the menu until the permanent one is fitted.
Dentures
A new complete denture takes four to five visits over three to four weeks: impressions, a bite record, a trial fitting in wax so you can see the teeth before they are finalised, the delivery itself, and at least one adjustment visit a few days later. That last visit matters. Almost every new denture needs small corrections once you have worn it for a few days, and patients who skip the adjustment are the ones who end up leaving the denture in a drawer.
Wisdom tooth removal
A wisdom tooth that is buried or tilted needs a small surgical procedure, typically thirty to sixty minutes under local anaesthetic. Swelling usually peaks on the second or third day, then settles. Plan on two or three days of soft food and light activity. Stitches, if they are not the dissolving kind, come out after about a week.
Treatments measured in months, not visits
Dental implants are the clearest example. Placing a single implant usually takes under an hour, and most patients are surprised at how little discomfort follows; it is often less than a difficult extraction. The waiting is the long part. The bone needs time to bond to the implant, generally around three months in the lower jaw and three to six months in the upper, and longer if a bone graft was needed first. Braces and clear aligners typically run twelve to twenty-four months. The first appointment, when braces are fitted, takes about an hour. After that, review visits every four to six weeks take fifteen to thirty minutes each. Aligner patients come less often but need to wear the trays twenty to twenty-two hours a day, which is a bigger commitment than it sounds. Full mouth rehabilitation, where many teeth are rebuilt together to restore a worn or collapsed bite, is my own speciality and the most planning-heavy treatment we do. It usually runs over several weeks to a few months, with a trial phase in temporary crowns so we can confirm that the new bite is comfortable before anything permanent is made.

Between visits: where treatment usually goes wrong
In my experience, very few treatments fail in the chair. They fail in the weeks between appointments. The most common version is a root canal started, the pain gone, and the patient never returning for the final filling and crown. A tooth left like that can look fine for months, then fracture below the gum line on a piece of chikki, at which point it often cannot be saved.
A few habits prevent most of these problems. Chew on the other side while a temporary filling or crown is in place. If a temporary falls out, keep it and call us rather than waiting for the next appointment. Finish the course of any medicine you are given, and understand that antibiotics calm an infection but do not cure it; the tooth still needs treatment. And if something feels wrong, such as a bite that feels high after a filling, come back early. A two-minute adjustment prevents weeks of soreness.
One broader point. According to the WHO Global Oral Health Status Report published in 2022, close to 3.5 billion people worldwide live with oral disease, and untreated decay in permanent teeth is the most common health condition of any kind. Most of that burden is not a lack of treatment options. It is treatment postponed until a filling has become a root canal, and a root canal has become an extraction.
What to eat afterwards, from a Gujarati kitchen
Most generic aftercare advice is written for someone else's diet. For the first day after an extraction, surgery or a new crown, the Gujarati kitchen already has what you need. Khichdi, dal-bhaat, dahi-bhaat, soft rotli dipped in dal, dhokla and well-cooked vegetables are all easy on a healing mouth. Let hot food cool to warm for the first twenty-four hours after an extraction.
The foods to hold back are equally familiar: khakhra, sev, fafda, chevdo, roasted peanuts and chikki for their hardness, and chewy or sticky sweets for their habit of pulling on temporaries and lodging in sockets. With a new implant or a fresh extraction, give these a week.
If you are observing a fast, tell us when you book. A short procedure under local anaesthetic is usually fine on a fasting day, but for an extraction or surgery we prefer that you have eaten something beforehand, and we will time any medicine around your fast.
